You probably wouldn’t know what to think of if you were flying over a body of water, looked down, and saw this stuff…until you either used some binoculars or flew a little lower. This is what happened on Lake Nauru in Kenya. The reality of what was being seen was revealed. It was GREAT.

The word was coined from the Latin controversia, as a composite of controversus – ‘turned in an opposite direction,’ from contra – ‘against’ – and vertere – to turn. A controversy can literally arise about anything really, history, religion, philosophy, politics, science, gender, people, age and race etc. This particular list however, talks about ten different controversial pictures from around the world. The Mysterious Hinterkaifeck Murders

In Germany, 1922, the murders of six people at the Hinterkaifeck farmstead shocked the nation. This wasn’t just because of the gruesome nature of the case, but also because the case was so incredibly weird, and it remains unsolved to this day. Over 100 people were interviewed in the murder, but no one was ever arrested. No motive was ever established as to explain the murders. The previous maid had left 6 months earlier, saying the home was haunted. The new maid arrived only hours before the murders.  It is believed that the perpetrator(s) remained at the farm for several days – someone had fed the cattle, and eaten food in the kitchen: the neighbours had also seen smoke from the chimney during the weekend. The photo above depicts one of the victims as he lay in the house barn.

While restoring one of the exploration huts in Antarctica, Conservators of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust discovered a box that turned out to be a remarkable treasure. It contained 22 never-before-seen cellulose nitrate negatives documenting the life of Antarctic explorers 100 years back. Preserved in a block of ice, these negatives surprisingly lived up to our days to shine a light on the Antarctic heroic era and the landscape itself.

Photoshop Restorations Of Old Photos

Baojun Yuan, learned Photoshop at 60 years old. He's now 76 and for the past decade or so has repaired over 2000 damaged photos and done it all for free. Yuan bought a computer and scanner himself and doesn't charge people because he jokingly says, "My teacher just taught me how to repair the photos, but he forgot to tell me how to charge".
