After considering ways to minimize pollution and improve social and environmental conditions, a Chinese construction firm – CCCC – wants to build a floating city. The company which is also responsible for the building of the presently incomplete 31 mile bridge linked between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, commissioned the AT Design Office to make a plan for the city which should cover an area of  four square miles using the same techniques that are being used to accomplish building the 31 mile bridge.

Sony and Panasonic are teaming up to develop a standard for professional-level optical drives. Ultimately, the duo hope to release a 300GB optical drive by the end of 2015, PCMag.com reports. The durable optical disc - dust-and-water-proof, resistant to changing temperatures and humidity - is ideal for a long-term storage tool. Sony and Panasonic plan to market the new disc format to businesses looking to store hefty amounts of data for long periods of time.

Terrafugia, the Woburn, MA, company developing the Transition flying car, has plans for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) sibling. The proposed Terrafugia TF-X would be a tilt-rotor flying machine that would take off and land like a helicopter. Instead of a runway, the TF-X could use a helipad or parking lot. That’s important because Terrafugia’s devices aren’t so much flying cars as roadable aircraft that take you from the airport to your destination a few miles away. The closer you land to your destination, the better. Don’t sell your Cessna 400 just yet. The flying car is a decade away and will likely cost on the high side of a half-million dollars. Maybe a million.

Sonic booms are, not surprisingly, incredibly loud, and what you may not know (I didn’t) is that aircraft traveling at such speeds are making that noise the entire time they’re flying. Perhaps it’s not surprising that supersonic flight has been banned over land, out of concern for people’s well being and worry over the sound damaging local wildlife. However, when it comes to reducing sonic booms, two wings are better than one. 

New Plasma Device Considered The Holy Grail Of Energy Generation And Storage

Scientists at the University of Missouri have devised a new way to create and control plasma that could transform American energy generation and storage. Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation and is completely safe in proximity to humans.
