People Who Accidentally Found a Fortune

The man who bought an official copy of the Declaration of Independence for $4

A man, who was not identified, bought a torn painting for $4 in a flea market in Adamstown, Pa., because he was interested in its frame. When he got home he removed the painting - a dismal country scene - and concluded the frame could not be salvaged, but found one of the 500 official copies from the Declaration of Independence, folded and hidden in the backing. The copy is a crisp, clean broadside, creased along lines where it had been folded. It was printed by John Dunlap on July 4, 1776, to carry news of America's independence to the citizens of the 13 colonies. It is one of 24 known copies of the Declaration, and one of only three remaining in private hands.

The $4 bargain was auctioned for $2,420,000 at Sotheby's. The buyer was Donald J. Scheer of Atlanta, president of Visual Equities Inc.

This ship was named after the ancient Japanese province Shinano. It was used during World War 2. When built, it was the largest aircraft carrier of its time. The Shinano met its demise when it was sunk by the submarine USS Archer-Fish on 29 November 1944, just 10 days after her commisioning.

1. Super Glue

Goes back to 1942 when people were thinking about guns and weapons. Dr. Harry Coover was working with cyanoacrylate in Eastman Kodak labs when he discovered the material was too sticky. He threw it away. After the war the cyanoacrylate containers was still stuck where he had thrown it in frustration and he could not remove it in any way. After convincing his superiors in 1958 about the product, Krazy Glue, as commonly known, went to the market as Eastman 910.

How UPS Was Started

UPS was started by two teenagers with one bicycle and $100 borrowed from a friend.

The date was August 28, 1907 and the two kids were 18 year old Claude Ryan and 19 year old Jim Casey. The two had one bike between them and $100 borrowed from a friend to found the “American Messenger Company” in Seattle, Washington. The company was initially run in a hotel basement at Second Avenue and Main Street in Seattle.

Orchids are not cheap, depending on which one you get the price range is huge, however, I never though I would find one that is at a price tag of $200,000. In 2005 a group of Chinese scientists did agricultural research to grow a very rare unique species of this beautiful flower. Not only is this flower expensive because it was man made, but also because it takes about four or five years to bloom.

He Continued Fighting WWII

Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese soldier who continued fighting World War II a full 29 years after the Japanese surrendered, because he didn’t know the war was over.

Hiroo Onoda is a Japanese citizen that originally worked at a Chinese trading company. When he was 20 years old, he was called to join the Japanese army. He promptly quit his job and headed off to training in Japan. At a certain point in his training, he was chosen to be trained at Nakano School as an Imperial Army Intelligence Officer. In this specialized military intelligence training, he was specifically taught methods of gathering intelligence and how to conduct guerrilla warfare. He was being groomed to go in behind enemy lines and be left with small pockets of soldiers to make life miserable for Japan’s enemies and gather intelligence in the process.

Stupid And Funny Boat Names

I think that a boat, however small or scruffy, should sport a dignified name. “Stars and Stripes” is a good name for an America’s Cup defender. But some of the names people saddle a poor defenseless boat with are beyond belief. Not to mention funny as hell! Besides, when you’re sinking and want the Coast Guard to come quickly, you don’t want to have to spell “Sea Weedy Pie” over the radio. In doing a bit of digging around, I found some other dumb names for a boat. Hope you have lots of fun with this.

Fish Parasite

4.3 centimeters crustacean enters the body through the gills of fish and bites into the tongue. Over time, the tongue dies out due to lack of blood, and parasite replaces it with its body.
