Common Health Myths Busted

There are many myths concerning health and how to maintain it. Some are relatively new and others are generations old, being passed done from grandparents to parents to children. Some of these myths are based in some type of truth and others are just so far fetched that its hard to believe that people accept them as truth.

Chocolate causes acne
Many teenagers have deprived themselves of a tasty treat due to this myth. For years chocolate has been held accountable for causing acne, but this is not the case. In 1969 a study was done to test this myth and it concluded with no direct correlation between chocolate and acne. There hasn’t been a controlled study since then and that has allowed for the myth to grow. Los Angelesdermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban stated, “Chocolate per se will not make you break out”.

Eggs are bad for the heart
Eggs have always been in a health debate. Many people say they are not good for you and you should do like vegans and cut them completely out of your diet. This way you don’t have to worry about your cholesterol rising and having heart problems. Truth is eggs aren’t bad at all. The cholesterol in eggs doesn’t have that much effect on us. Saturated and trans fats are what cause high cholesterol levels that lead to stroke and heart attacks. An egg only has 2 grams of saturated fat and no trans fat. This doesn’t mean you can just start putting eggs on any and everything. There are recommendations given by the American Heart Association. AHA suggest that you limit your cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg daily.

Carbohydrate make you fat
Carbohydrate are not the sole reason you put on weight. According to Jean Harvey-Berino, Ph.D., R.D., chair of the department of nutrition and food sciences at the University of Vermont, there’s nothing inherently fattening about carbohydrates. “It’s eating too many calories, period, that makes you fat.” If you cut out the “good-carb” foods, such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, you’re missing out on your body’s main source of fuel as well as vital nutrients and fiber. In fact, carbs are one of the easiest nutrients to absorb and burn off.

Microwaving takes away nutrients
Some people consider the microwave a dangerous tool to put food in. The term “microwaves” and “radiation” make people think about bombs and nuclear plants. They are convinced that the microwaves are taking the nutrients out of the food. What’s really happening is the food is being heated quicker than other means of cooking food. This actually helps more nutrients remain in the food. Cooking food at hotter temperatures and for longer periods of time (i.e. using the oven or stove) takes nutrients away.

Eating smaller meals through out the day keeps metabolism going
It’s true that an active metabolism burns calories, but eating small meals throughout the entire day does not cause your metabolism to burn a significant amount of calories. Instead of eating small meals all day, have a healthy snack in between meals to prevent over eating at your regular meal time. A specific and steady eating pattern that works for you is your best bet.

Gluten free is beneficial for anyone
Something that I am seeing more of is gluten-free food products. This is due to the myth that a gluten-free diet is beneficial for you. Unless you are a celiac or gluten intolerant, a gluten-free diet will have no effect on you. Celiacs cannot absorb gluten which leads to deficiencies. Gluten intolerant people experience pain, discomfort and serious fatigue when they consume gluten.
