Top 3 KL Bakeries

By : Alexandra Prabaharan

The finest places in KL to indulge in great bread
This savoury crusty sun dried tomato bread from Hiestand just begs to be tucked into.
Bread lovers are always in search of the best bakery in town to get their delicious crusty carbohydrate fix. While many of the spots in the city adjust their flavours to suit the Malaysian palate resulting in sweet and chewy breads, we tracked down the three best KL bakeries that stay true to authentic European flavours.

1. Tommy Le Baker
Each bite of the delectable breads here will bring you a taste of France.
Why we love it: Here you'll find authentic French breads.
Specialty bread: The baguette
Authentic French breads are the reason to drop by this little bakery tucked away in Jalan Ipoh. Tommy Lee spent 10 years in France where he took up certifications in pastry, confections, chocolates and bread making. He worked for two years as a private caterer in Paris producing desserts for parties and eventually travelled around the country to wheat mills, bakeries, and communal ovens to increase his knowledge on breads. It was during these travels that he picked up his incredible skills.
The breads here are as close to French standards as possible without factoring in the altitude and humidity differences that make it impossible to get exact French quality breads. Lee's croissants are buttery and flaky, while his baguettes are crusty with a good hollow sound when knocked on. This is a worthy spot to drop in and grab a bite to eat as you listen to French radio and take in the aroma of freshly baked bread.

2. Hiestand
In the search for the top KL bakeries we found a winner in this great spot.
Why we love it: The grain breads are crusty and done just right.
Specialty bread: Sun dried tomato bread
In the search of top KL bakeries this worthy find scored highly with its sun dried tomato bread. The loaf is good just on its own and even better when broken off and dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Hiestand is a Swiss Gourmet bakery that specializes in European goodies that are made with high quality natural raw ingredients and no preservatives or additives.
Aside from the sun dried tomato bread you can find an entire range of grain breads, sourdough breads, and other baked specialties. Their breads are so popular around town that you'll find they're supplied to many restaurants and bread shops in the city. Stop by their cafe and indulge in one of their treats with a cup of coffee. The smell of freshly baked bread will keep you on an all time high.

3. The Bread Shop
The sticky sweet cinnamon rolls will have you licking your fingers clean.
Why we love it: It's a cosy spot to indulge in baked treats.
Specialty bread: The broom bread
Everything made in this bakery is without preservatives and artificial substances and on Wednesdays and Saturdays they even have organic bread available. In keeping with the health spin The Bread Shop has created a special bread known as broom bread that is packed with grains that are meant to sweep your digestive system clean.
The cinnamon roll and chocolate croissant are another must try here. The cinnamon roll is chewy and sticky sweet, while the chocolate croissant boasts a flaky exterior revealing a chocolatey soft interior. The minimalistic and funky decor makes this a trendy stop for that baked good fix.
