It is hard to describe or to explain the fascination exerted
by a fast elevator. I am sure that, for a jungle or countryside-raised child,
the elevators are by far the most interesting and fascinating thing in a
big city. Many different reasons can make a certain elevator be
interesting, amazing or fascinating. The fastest elevators are for
sure fascinating; their acceleration is faster than a plane. Outdoor
elevators are also amazing through dimensions, but many of them are
causing serious environment issues. The elevators linking the parts of the city
from different heights are very useful, and
became iconic landmarks of that city.
Here are some of the world’s most unique elevators:
The Gateway Arch
The Gateway Arch of St. Louis, Missouri is a must see. To go
to the top of the Arch, passengers in groups of five enter an egg-shaped
compartment. The trip to the top of the Arch takes four minutes.
Santa Justa Lift
The Santa Justa Lift is in the city of Lisbon at Santa Justa Street.
The Santa Justa Lift was made in 1902 and is powered by steam.
Hammetschwand Elevator
Europe’s highest exterior elevator is the
Hammetschwand Lift located in Switzerland. It whisks passengers
153 meters up to the summit in less than one minute.
Lacerda Elevator
Connecting the old and the new part of Salvador, and allowing access to more than
30,000 people a day at a cost of $0.05 per 38 second ride, this elevator
reaches a height of 72 meters.
Taipei
101
The world’s fastest elevator is installed at Taipei 101. The Taipei 101 is 101-storey
building and has 67 elevator units. These rockets skyward at a peak speed of
3,314 ft. per minute.
Bailong Elevator
This 326 meter high elevator takes you up the side of one of
the many enormous cliffs in Zhangjiajie,
China. It is
claimed to be the highest and heaviest outdoor elevator in the world.
Louvre Elevator
At the push of a button, the elevator inside the
Louvre, Paris,
rises to the occasion. A slide-out walkway appears once the circular platform
comes to a rest for guests to board/disembark.
Eiffel
Tower
Due to the shape of the Eiffel Tower’s
curved legs duo-lift elevators are running up and down each of the four legs.
Luxor
Inclinator Elevator
In Las Vegas,
Nevada, at the Luxor Hotel, is
the Inclinator. The shape of this casino is a pyramid. Therefore, the
elevator travels up the side of the pyramid at a 39 degree angle.
Oregon
City Municipal Elevator
This one is unique because it’s the only outdoor municipal
elevator in the United
States. The first elevator was made in 1915.
The new elevator was dedicated in 1955.
