Not all inventions are a gold mine – in fact most of them
are complete duds. While many are cool and interesting ideas for one reason or
another they never quite caught on. Here is a list of 10 weird gadgets that no
one really got.
Are you a metal detecting guru but get tired of holding that
heavy metal detector all the time? No problem, Hammacher Schlemmer has found
your solution! Metal-detecting sandals are able to scan the earth under your
feet as you walk! The battery circles your calf, but don’t look these babies up
online just yet… They’re no longer available.

2. Cigarette Umbrella
This 1930’s invention was designed for the smoker tired of
having to worry about soggy cigarettes in the rain. Unfortunately, this
interesting gadget never took off, but it is an interesting design!

3. Swatch Talk
You know the spy movies where they are able to talk into
their wristwatch. During the 1990s the Swatch Talk, designed by Swatch, was an
invention that used new cellphone technology at the time to recreate the
classic spy gadget. But it seemed a bit odd to consumers to talk into your arm,
but at least the watch was water resistant!

4. Bone Fone
This idea is as fascinating as it is weird! The Bone Fone
used your skeleton to create a private rich aural experience- in short your own
private concert through the resonance of your bones. Cool, but creepy. Needless
to say the Bone Fone never caught on and it’s not hard to imagine why!

5. USB Pregnancy Test
Potential moms could be getting tech savvy and analyze their
own urine for pregnancy. Using a Horizontal USB port to prevent “accidental
moisture transference,” a woman can simply plug in the USB to her computer and
wait for the results!

6. Cigarette-Tracking Case
Circa the 1940s giving away too many cigarettes seemed to be
somewhat of a concern. This cigarette case was meant to keep track of your
cigarette inventory and how many you were giving away to others rather than
using yourself.

7. Wrist Maps
A 1920s road trip must, this wrist map device allowed you to
manually scroll down a map for directions. Think of it as the primitive
portable GPS. Simply choose the map that lead to where you wanted to go, switch
it in and scroll for directions while headed down the road. Unfortunately, this
seems even more distracting than that demanding GPS voice in your vehicle.

8. InteliData Money Clip
InteliData had the jump on PayPal and online banking apps in
the late 1990s. They created a floppy disk-like device that you could carry all
your financial information on. They were sure clients would be interested in
the convenience – except not really.

9. Toilet Tunes
Think elevator music for your toilet. Really? Using a sensor
on the inside of the toilet lid, the sound machine would play smooth jazz while
you take care of business. This was to ensure no one would be able to hear what
was going on in the bathroom while you were in there. It also managed to
eliminate privacy while in the bathroom as well.

10. Massage Mouse
This little mouse does more than help you point-and-click on
your computer screen, it also gives you a handy massage (excuse the pun). Does
this little device actually work? One Amazon review read, “I suffer from
chronic widespread pain, and this little mouse has helped me so much.” Maybe
this little device still has some hope for catching on!

Not all inventions make it big like the iPod or cellphone,
however they sure do make us wonder what some people were thinking and give us
some insight into current innovations!
