Earthquake In Japan: 12 Months Later

1. A year ago, on March 11, 2011, northeastern Japan was hit by a magnitude 9 earthquake, also known as the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the Great East Japan Earthquake. 6. The authorities were forced to create a restricted area 30 kilometers in diameter around the stricken nuclear power plant and to evacuate 140,000 people from the region. 7.  The losses incurred by the calamity, minus the consequences of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi (One) nuclear power plant, totaled about $215 billion. 8. The calamity which befell Japan, is the fifth such disaster in the past 2,500 years. Of the 22.5 million metric tons of rubble and debris caused by the gigantic tsunami, Japanese specialists have so far managed to eliminate or recycle only 1.17 million metric tons, or 5 percent of the entire volume.
