Top Three-Wheeled Concept Vehicles

Here is a look at some of the most interesting three-wheeled vehicles out there. Some of these are on the verge of going truly mainstream, while others are just pure imaginative brilliance. While their commercial prospects are somewhat limited right now, lets hope that they mature over time to some day provide us with one more truly viable mode of transportation.

Hodge Hawk Three-Wheeler Concept

The Hawk Concept, was designed by New Zealand native, Alex Hodge. With a body molded from fiberglass and an all-glass roof-door, this futuristic concept is here to sway heads. It is powered by a 999cc V-Twin engine that generates 120-horsepower.

2005 Peugeot 20Cup Concept

This dynamic new concept, the Peugeot 20Cup, like many in the list tries to erase the line that differentiates a car (2 front wheels) from a bike (single rear wheel). It is powered by a turbocharged, direct injection 4-cylinder petrol engine that generates 170-horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.

Matus Prochaczka’s 3-Wheel Concept Car

This unique concept named MAG was created by designer Matus Prochaczka. The car runs on magnetic power and utilizes an electric engine that has the same polarity as the road (the roads would have to be made of concrete panels with magnets embedded in them), thus propelling the vehicle forward. It was the recipient of the Unseen Technology award at the Interior Motives Design Awards in 2007.

Marotti Three-Wheeled Concept Car

Developed by a private company named Marotti, this trike takes on design cues as though it were born out of wedlock between a fighter jet and the soldiers straight out of Star Wars. It is powered by a 750cc Honda engine and generates 100-horsepower.

Aptera 2e Electric Car

This aerodynamically efficient vehicle, designed to glide like a bird is developed by Aptera Motors. Not to be left behind in the design segment, the Aptera 2e comes complete with gullwing doors, a fluid exterior form and an unique three-wheel design. Propelled by an electric motor, it can hit 60 mph in less than 10 seconds.

Hayabusa Reverse Trike – TT-Busa

The TT-Busa is simply a modified Suzuki Hayabusa. Coming with an extended swinger and a custom dual-wheel front, this trike is the first and only one in the list that resembles a motorcycle more than a car. Considered the fastest motorcycle in the world, the two-wheel Hayabusa can hit top speeds of 186 mph.

2009 Campagna T-Rex

This commercially available three wheeler ($49,995 MSRP) is developed by a Canadian company named Campagna. The Campagna T-Rex is powered by a 197-horsepower Kawasaki inline-four engine, and can sprint from naught to 60 mph in as little as 3.92 seconds.

Energya – Three Wheel Concept By Higgins-Aube

The distinctly cut Energya is developed by Higgins-Aube Inc., and was designed as a sports car that can seat two. Currently powered by a motorcycle engine with a six-speed sequential transmission, the manufacturer hopes to some day develop it with an electric power technology.

Volkswagen GX3 3-wheel concept

The Volkswagen GX3 concept comes straight from California, and looks like a sports car with its protruding front wheels and open roof-top. The trike is equipped with a 2.6 liter engine that produces 125-horsepower and allows the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds.

Peugeot RD: Electric three-wheeler concept

Designed by Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar for a Peugeot Design contest in 2008, the Peugeot RD Concept is designed with ease-of-navigation in mind. The concept is designed to change direction and become more compact when faced with slow traffic or slow speeds. It comes with a panoramic roof that allows for all-round visibility and is equipped with a environmentally-friendly electric motor.
