Urban Exploration: London's Dark Satanic Mills [UK]

London's Royal Victoria Dock was once a hotbed of industry and commerce. In particular, this waterfront location was home to some of the nation's leading flour mills: namely the Rank Hovis Premier Mill, and that vast behemoth of the industrial revolution known as Millennium Mills.

Now abandoned for more than three decades, these rotting mills stand in stark contrast to a district fast developing. Heading down to the docks, I decided to pay them a visit – tackling the tight site security to get a look inside these last vestigial skeletons of early Edwardian industry.

The Mysterious Hinterkaifeck Murders
In Germany, 1922, the murders of six people at the Hinterkaifeck farmstead shocked the nation. This wasn’t just because of the gruesome nature of the case, but also because the case was so incredibly weird, and it remains unsolved to this day. Over 100 people were interviewed in the murder, but no one was ever arrested. No motive was ever established as to explain the murders. The previous maid had left 6 months earlier, saying the home was haunted. The new maid arrived only hours before the murders.  It is believed that the perpetrator(s) remained at the farm for several days – someone had fed the cattle, and eaten food in the kitchen: the neighbours had also seen smoke from the chimney during the weekend. The photo above depicts one of the victims as he lay in the house barn.

However, on this day, the women are in the forefront presenting the men (and sometimes even female friends) in their lives gifts (mostly chocolates), to express either their love, courtesy or social obligation.

When you have a trigger digit it gets locked in a flexed position and you are unable to unlock and extend it except by pulling it with the other hand. This triggering of the finger or thumb is a common problem, which can lead to a significant disability resulting in loss of hand function and the performance of routine activities. A similar condition may also affect children but in much less frequency.

Why The Toilet Is Sometimes Called A “John”

The term is thought to derive from Sir John Harrington or, at the least, to have been popularized due to Harrington. (There are a few references of the toilet being called “Cousin John”, as well as many references to it being called “Jake” and other such generic names, before Harrington was born; but it is generally agreed that why we now call it “John” is because of Harrington and not from the old “Cousin John”).
