Now two researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, have photographed these "sailing rocks" being blown by light winds across the former lake bed.

See, there are places on this planet that you absolutely cannot go to, unless of course you are that kind of person. This list discusses ten of those places that you probably will have to wait your entire life to get into, and the places that you probably wouldn’t be allowed to enter even if you were given multiple lifetimes. Most of these places are top secret government institutions or in one case it is a club that has a several year waiting list. I hope you find this list informative and enjoyable.

Myth: There is such a thing as true bulletproof glass

In movies and TV shows, bulletproof glass is often depicted to be indestructible. No matter what weapon is used, no matter how many bullets are fired, bulletproof glass remains intact and unchanged. The only problem is, in real life, bulletproof glass isn’t really bulletproof and it isn’t really glass.

Top 10 Animals You Didn’t Know We Just Discovered

In 1758, Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus published the first comprehensive registry of all living things. This book named, described, and categorized thousands of organisms, and introduced the method of classification used for every new species discovered to this day. With this information, a biological revolution began, and by the early 1800′s, nearly every organism that is presently well-known had been described worldwide. There were, however, a few stragglers – some incredible ones – that managed to avoid detection for a lot longer than you probably thought.

Top 10 Weirdest Writing Systems

Original source : http://www.toptenz.net

As writing goes, English is pretty straightforward. Sure, it has its weird parts: some of our letters combine to make new sounds, we have extra letters we don’t really need and there are spelling rules that only apply half the time. But on the whole, we have it easy. It’s not always like this. The Latin alphabet that English uses is alphabetic – in general, there’s one letter for every sound. In other writing systems, one character can signal a whole syllable. Or it might be like the Chinese system, in which characters signify whole objects or concepts. And sometimes, things can get even weirder.

8 Movie Heroes You Didn’t Realise Probably Died Horrible Deaths

Original source : http://whatculture.com

Author : T.J. Bernard

Having invested both time and money in a trip to the movies, there’s arguably no better reward for all your efforts than to be given the chance to watch the main hero secure their dreams, rescue the girl, and save the day. Because when they succeed, it makes us feel good, and that - fundamentally - is what we like to take from our blockbusters, isn’t it? As effective as it often is, nobody really enjoys watching a good movie protagonist meet their end at the hands of a villain. Sure, sometimes there’s absolutely no way for a character to survive a preposterous set of events without it seeming silly, and a self-sacrifice can be a great way to imbue a character with a dose of added coolness. But generally speaking, we like ‘em to survive. And when they do, it’s great. Unless, of course, there’s something that the movie isn’t telling you.
Yes, caught up in the happiness of a heroic finale, there’s a seriously good chance you might’ve missed some important (and dooming) implications contained in the 8 movies we’ve assembled here. Like, um, how that happy ending wasn’t so happy after all, and that the hero probably died horribly whilst the closing credits obnoxiously obscured your view…

Top 5 Famous People Who Didn’t Actually Exist

Posted in August 2011

5. Pope Joan
One of the most famous Popes of all time is the one that modern day scholars believe probably didn’t exist. Pope Joan was a figure who was once believed to have served as Pontiff for a few years around 853-855 A.D. Her story first appeared in the 13th century writings of a Dominican Friar called Jean De Mailly, and for centuries it was a well-known legend in Europe. The tale came in many forms, but the most popular version described Joan as pious and brilliant woman who, after disguising herself as a man, rose quickly through the ranks of the Catholic Church and was chosen as Pope. Her reign supposedly came to an end when, while riding on horseback one day, she suddenly fell ill and gave birth to a child. Here the story takes many different turns: some versions say she died in childbirth, others say natural causes, and others still say that an angry mob murdered her. While historians have found enough evidence to reject the idea that Pope Joan ever really existed - some have claimed that the tale originated in a satirical story about Pope John XI - there’s no denying her legend played a major part in the religion of the Middle Ages. Religious scholars and popular writers like Boccaccio often made references to her, and there are reports of statues of her being erected. The legend persisted for several hundred years, and it took until 1601 before Pope Clement VIII officially denied the story.
