The 10 Worst Films of 2013

Original source : http://www.slantmagazine.com
Posted : December 2013
Author : Ed Gonzalez & R. Kurt Osenlund

Contrary to the curious, outspoken beliefs of some, we prefer to celebrate movies around these parts, culminating each December with our collaborative list of the 25 best films of the year. But while nearly all films deserve careful consideration, there are plenty that deserve a proper, vitriolic takedown, maybe even a warning label. Scraping the very bottoms of our moviegoing barrels, Slant's Ed Gonzalez and I winced as we remembered our worst film experiences of 2013. The five we each loathed most were compiled into a list of 10, and they're counted down here in our personal, descending orders of deplorableness. From the bloated egos of Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise to the masochistic horrors of military violence and high-end shopping, click on to see what almost drove us both out of the theater. {R. The 5 Most Obviously Drug-Fueled TV Appearances Ever

5. Crispin Glover on Letterman
Date: July 28, 1987
Evidence: The first symptom is the wig. We're not sure what George McFly's hair looked like prior to this interview, but we're pretty certain it didn't look like that. Then there's the clothing. He's dressed in striped pants, a heinous purple shirt and a pair of black platform shoes that don't appear to fit him. Keep in mind that this is '87, not the early '70s. If you're wearing what Crispin Glover is wearing during this interview, then you've clearly been high long enough to have gone shoe shopping while f**ked up. As far as behavioral symptoms, we're not really sure how to describe what Glover is doing here. At first he seems to be terrified of Dave and the audience, but then he challenges Letterman to an arm wrestling match and tries to jump-kick him in the head.
Drug(s) They Were Probably On: Difficult to tell. At first it seems like a classic acid freak-out. He is looking at Dave like he has three heads and the audience like they're a big tangled lizard orgy. But then he starts getting physically aggressive. Our theory: a second drug along the lines of PCP, taken right before he went out, kicked in halfway through the interview.

7 Movies That Are Incredibly Hard To Watch

Original source : http://wegotthiscovered.com

I’ll go out on a limb and give a rough estimation that about 97% of movie buffs have come across at least one movie at some point in their lives that they just couldn’t watch from start to finish. Everyone has vastly different tastes in films, different things that make them tick and differing thresholds of tolerance for boredom, graphic violence and gore, downright stupidity and endless cliches. There are countless reasons why someone would decide to hit the stop button partway through a film. Filmmakers who are notorious for pushing the envelope are generally regarded as those who make the most disturbing of movies, with varying degrees of success. Some do succeed all the way and garner critical praise and lucrative financial gain, a la Quentin Tarantino. Others, while they may achieve a certain level of praise, do split people’s opinions straight down the middle about whether their films are artistic, or just plain torture porn.

Top 9 Actors Who Turned Down Memorable Movie Roles

Original source : http://uniquedaily.com

“Chances are if you turn down a job you later regret, not too many people are going to beat you up over it. After all, your friends and family will probably be too busy consoling you and trying to cheer you up to make fun of you. But movie stars don’t quite have that luxury. When they turn down a role only to see some other actor turn it into something iconic, the whole world gets to know about it. Sure, their loved ones are probably just as sympathetic as yours would be, but unfortunately for them, we’re not their loved ones and, so we don’t mind reminding these nine actors and the whole world just what a giant mistake they made, and we don’t mind asking the question that is probably on their minds every day: "just what would that movie have been like had they not turned it down?"

Georges Méliès - The Master Of Special Effects

by Rita Novaes

In the cinema history, there are few men who are so important and so unfairly forgotten as Georges Méliès. Excepting the shooting and projecting equipment, it would be no exaggeration to say that Méliès invented absolutely everything on cinema: the filming studios, the cinematographic genres, the screenplays, the mechanical and chemical techniques, the special effects. He was the pioneer in everything he did - and he did it with such an imagination and mastery that great filmmakers like Chaplin or Griffith recognized his influence and inspiration.

Top 5 Famous People Who Didn’t Actually Exist

Posted in August 2011

5. Pope Joan
One of the most famous Popes of all time is the one that modern day scholars believe probably didn’t exist. Pope Joan was a figure who was once believed to have served as Pontiff for a few years around 853-855 A.D. Her story first appeared in the 13th century writings of a Dominican Friar called Jean De Mailly, and for centuries it was a well-known legend in Europe. The tale came in many forms, but the most popular version described Joan as pious and brilliant woman who, after disguising herself as a man, rose quickly through the ranks of the Catholic Church and was chosen as Pope. Her reign supposedly came to an end when, while riding on horseback one day, she suddenly fell ill and gave birth to a child. Here the story takes many different turns: some versions say she died in childbirth, others say natural causes, and others still say that an angry mob murdered her. While historians have found enough evidence to reject the idea that Pope Joan ever really existed - some have claimed that the tale originated in a satirical story about Pope John XI - there’s no denying her legend played a major part in the religion of the Middle Ages. Religious scholars and popular writers like Boccaccio often made references to her, and there are reports of statues of her being erected. The legend persisted for several hundred years, and it took until 1601 before Pope Clement VIII officially denied the story.
