7 Uncomfortable Superhero Origins That Sorely Need Updating

Those sticky, icky moments from characters' pasts that deserve to be buried deep in a forest somewhere. Most comic book origin stories are silly beyond belief: an alien sent from a dying world to another with foster parents that look exactly like him? Toxic waste granting blindness and super-senses in one go (not to mention turning pet shop escapees into fearsome martial artists)? And if they’re not terrifically dumb, then they’re relentlessly bleak: there are more orphans in the DC and Marvel Universes than in every production of Annie combined.

1  Listerine cures toenail fungus
Soaking your feet in Listerine mouthwash for 15-20 minutes, twice a day, will cure most cases of toenail fungus. Listerine contains antiseptic and disinfectant ingredients; it has been used for everything from curing gonorrhea to cleaning floors. Listerine is also good for curing blisters (dab onto blister 2-3 times per day to dry it out), and dandruff.

10 Times Wolverine Died

He’s the best there is at what he does, and what he does isn’t very nice. Wait, what are we talking about? We’re not sure, because Wolverine has gotten up to all sorts of nasty business in both his comic book and on-screen incarnations. He’s killed a lot of people, that’s for sure, and continues to do so. We reckon he has a bit of a sordid sexual history, concealed only by PG-13 ratings. The other thing Logan’s known for is being impossible to kill himself, despite the high number of people who’ve tried – probably a lot of the same people he eventually ends up sticking with his own infamous claws – and inevitably failed. Owing to a skeleton reinforced with a made-up metal and a healing factor that lets him recover from most wounds, Wolverine is all but indestructible.

A while back, Oddee presented a list of the 20 Most Amazing Coincidences. The article proved to be so popular that we're doing it again, folks! In fact, I was about to present my idea of doing another list of coincidences when my editor beat me to the punch and emailed me asking if I would like to do a list of – you guessed it – coincidences! (Insert the theme from The Twilight Zone here). Are they divine intervention? Fate? We might not agree on how they happen, but we can all agree that at some point in our lives, we have experienced some kind of freaky coincidence. Here are some more of the really strange and mind blowing ones.

Actors and actresses always go above and beyond the call of duty when filming a movie and there have been countless tales of many a crazy actor risking life and limb for the art of cinema. You just need to look no further than Tom Cruise’s death deifying antics on that Qatar skyscraper in Mission: Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol to see how far even the most comfortably richest of Hollywood talent will look the grim reaper dead in the eye for the sake of a scene. Often of course, this can lead to serious accidents during filming, which nevertheless makes for an entertaining read for us mere mortals to scoff at while living our own boring workaday lives, but obviously a worry for the people involved. While jealousy may be the real reason we take so much joy at the misfortune of the rich and famous, who doesn’t like finding out what really goes on behind the scenes that we don’t hear about with film-making? We admire enough actors and actresses for doing their own stunts and putting their body on the line when it all goes well, so why shouldn’t we see the proverbial bloopers? Here are six actors or actresses who have thankfully survived almost-fatal accidents during filming this year’s biggest films. In no particular order of severity, but all equally entertaining, I present to you danger, humour, and horror intertwined.

1  Raymond Chapman Killed by Spitball
Raymond Chapman, a shortstop for the Cleveland Naps and later the Indians, has the dubious distinction of being the only ballplayer to die of a game-related injury in the major leagues. On August 16, 1920, Chapman was hit by a pitch at the top of the 5th inning in a game with the New York Yankees. Back then, spitballs and other ornery tricks were quite common and the ball thrown by Carl Mays was reportedly very erratic and hard to see. It hit Chapman so hard, it sounded like the crack of a bat. Chapman froze momentarily before falling to the ground with blood pouring out his ear; he died early the next day. After that, umpires were required to immediately replace dirty balls, although the batting helmet didn't become mandatory until 1971.

The Murphy Bed is named after its inventor Lawrence Murphy in 1900, it is a name given to any bed that can be folded up against a wall or hidden and exposed as the home owner pleases. The Murphy Bed has risen back into prominence in contemporary design due to its ability to work around the increasingly smaller and space constrained living spaces available in most modern cities. It also has functional and aesthetic value to larger rooms and houses, lending flexibility and a sense of space to the living area. Here we have listed out some of the iconic Murphy Beds from over the last century.
