India Orders Jet Airways To Suspend Pilots After Mid-Air Dive

NEW DELHI, Aug 14, 2014:
India’s civil aviation regulator said on Thursday it has ordered Jet Airways to suspend two pilots after a flight to Brussels dived 5,000 feet, forcing air traffic controllers to issue an emergency warning. The Times of India said the captain was on a scheduled rest break when the plane dropped almost 5,000 feet over Turkey, putting it at an altitude assigned to another aircraft. Air traffic controllers in Ankara had to issue an emergency warning to the co-pilot on duty, who the paper said “did not notice that the aircraft had lost altitude” because she was using her tablet computer at the time.

Robin Williams, the acting legend who has been a constant presence in films and television for over forty years, was found dead this morning in his Tiburon, CA home, in a reported suicide. He was 63 years old. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office reported that Williams was found earlier today in his home, dead by asphyxiation. The tragic news was confirmed by Variety, with the actor’s publicist Mara Buxbaum confirming the actor’s passing, and that he had been suffering from depression. This is a sad day for Williams’ family, friends and legions of fans around the world.

A 9-year-old boy recently renewed his vows to a woman 53 years his seniors, a year after first marrying her. Sanele Masilela and Helen Shabangu of Tshwane, South Africa wed in 2013, claiming it was an order from their dead ancestors. The renewing of the vows was required by a local tradition which states a wedding ceremony has to be repeated at the bride’s home in order to make it official.

Richard Norris, 39, started a new chapter in his life after a miraculous procedure gave him a new face. The Virginia resident lost most of his face after he accidently shot himself in 1997. His lower jaw, lips, tongue, and nose were blown off and his face was left disfigured. For the next 15 years, Norris locked himself inside his parents’ home and would rarely step out. All the mirrors in the house were covered so he wouldn’t have to look at his own face.

Cars, smartphones, jewelry and cash are among the many valuable items most people expect thieves to target. As a result, Americans take precautions to keep such possessions safe. Not many, however, would think to lock up their Nutella, pregnancy tests or Tide laundry detergent. Yet, these everyday, ordinary household products are among the most commonly stolen goods. Some stolen items seem unusual because their value is not easily visible. For example, thieves steal catalytic converters for the platinum. Frank Scafidi of the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) gave the example of manhole covers, as well as a variety of other metal objects, that are often stolen to be resold as scrap metal. Incidents of these kinds of theft have risen considerably, likely due to the rising price of metals like copper, and platinum.
